Samuel William Lord

Lance Corporal 15640

Sam Lord

"I heard the voice of Jesus say 'Come unto me and rest,
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast'
I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad.
I found in Him a resting place, and He has made me glad."

(Horatius Bonar)
Sam was one of my grandmother's older brothers, one of nine children born to George and Annie Lord in Barwell, Leicestershire.

He joined the 8th Battalion Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, and in early 1917 was sent to fight in Northern Greece. He was wounded in action and was nursed at the 31st Casualty Clearing Station. There he succumbed to infection arising from his wounds on Sunday 4th March, 1917, aged only 25, and was buried at the Sarigol Military Cemetery, Kriston, Northern Greece.

My grandmother and her family, though they grieved for their loss, were tremendously proud that Sam had fought for his King and Country, and made the supreme sacrifice. He is remembered in my family through my second son, Joshua William, who bears his name.

Being buried so far away our family is indebted to the War Graves Commission for maintaining Sam's grave, with the love, respect and honour that such a brave soldier deserves.

"Arm yourselves and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict"
